What is it?

Ciclovias are city streets that have been freed from motorized traffic to allow, during a few hours a day, usually on Sundays and holidays, the free and safe circulation of thousands of people on bicycle, skate or foot.

How is it?

They generate recreational spaces where physical, cultural and educational activities are developed to promote community building and foment healthy lifestyles, while enabling the recuperation of public spaces at the human scale.

Like it?

City governments and policy makers can find in the Ciclovia concept an effective and economical program to promote public health, local economic development and social cohesion in their communities.

Changes at Biciacción: Mario Muñoz transfers to the government of Ecuador

QUITO, ECUADOR - Mario Muñoz, President of the CRA co-founder organization, Biciacción, has accepted an invitation from the Ministry of Transportation and Public Works to join the team that will be executing the National Plan of Ciclovias. Below is a message by Mario Muñoz to CRA members and collaborators.

Médico peruano formado en Universidad de San Marcos, Lima con Maestría en Nutrición de Salud Pública de la Johns Hopkins University.

Entre 2000 y 2011 se ha desempeñado como Asesor Regional de Alimentación Saludable y Vida Activa, en la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (la rama de las Américas de la OMS) en Washington, D.C., donde ha coordinado la aplicación regional de la Estrategia Mundial OMS sobre dieta saludable, actividad física y salud; ha organizado la Fuerza para las Américas libre de grasas Trans, y ha desarrollado alianzas estratégicas con la comunidad de desarrollo urbano sostenible en las Américas.

Es co-fundador de la Red de Ciclovías Recreativas de las Américas y promotor del Concurso anual “Ciudades Activas, Ciudades Saludables”. Co-investigador principal de un proyecto internacional patrocinado por el CDC que estudió la relación entre el entorno físico urbano y el transporte en los niveles de actividad física y la salud de las personas en la ciudad de Bogotá. Ha trabajado en las políticas de salud pública y programas en Chile, Brasil, México, Ecuador, Argentina, Puerto Rico, Colombia y Costa Rica.

Previo a su posición en la OPS trabajó en nutrición y salud pública en Perú y Ecuador por más de 15 años. Fue investigador principal en el Instituto de Investigación Nutricional en Lima, Perú (1989-1999) y en 1995-97 investigador visitante en el Departamento de Pediatría, Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad de California en Davis. Ha publicado más de 50 artículos revisados por colegas científicos.

Desde agosto del 2011, ocupa el puesto de Viceministro de la Salud del Perú. En Noviembre de 2011, fue elegido Presidente de la Red de Ciclovías Recreativas de las Américas por unanimidad.

Why Cycling Counts? (and by that I mean, counts in the bank)

Let us step back from our passion for bikes as a means of social transformation and environmental salvation, just for a bit, and look at the tremendous impact that transportation has on our lives. Late 20^th century transportation, dominated by fossil fuel powered vehicles, was a marvel of speed and power. But not efficiency or equity. Because oil was cheap and plentiful, we built transportation systems that ignored economics. Now that oil is becoming scarcer and more expensive to mine--and the world’s population has expanded to 7 billion persons--we have to begin accounting for the true costs of transportation based on petroleum.

Will Open Streets Last?

On the eve of the much expected Open Streets season in North America, where dozens of initiatives will be celebrated this summer, and after a particularly encouraging beginning of the year in Latin America where Ciclovias have gained significant political territory, it might seem silly to ask, will Open Streets last?
